01 When To Customise

When to customise a theme vs build from scratch

Most Shopify briefs that arrive as "we need a custom theme" should actually be "we need to customise a great existing theme." Sometimes the opposite is true.

If your brand is at $0-$5M annual revenue and your store is mainly product photography + descriptions, a thoughtfully-customised premium theme (Dawn, Impact, Pipeline) almost always wins on cost-to-launch and maintainability. If you’re at $5M+ with brand-specific UX patterns, complex PDPs, or custom merchandising logic, the bespoke build pays back — both in conversion and in not fighting a theme that nearly fits.

We will tell you straight which side of the line you’re on. Some of our best engagements have started with “you don’t need us to rebuild this.”

02 Plans

Plus, Standard, or Headless?

Each tier unlocks different capabilities. We pick the one that fits the brand, not the one that pays the most commission.

Shopify Standard / Advanced covers 90% of DTC needs and a lot of $10M+ brands run on it perfectly happily. Shopify Plus earns its price when you need Functions for custom logic, Checkout Extensibility, B2B/wholesale flows, or multi-store architecture — not because “we should be on Plus.” Headless (Hydrogen) earns its premium when performance and frontend freedom are competitive advantages — typically luxury / fashion brands and content-heavy commerce.

03 App Stack

Why app stack rationalisation matters

The average Shopify store has 30+ apps installed. Each adds load time, monthly cost, and operational complexity.

On every engagement we audit the app stack. Typical findings: 3-4 apps doing what one good app does, 5-6 apps that haven’t been used in months, 2-3 apps with performance penalties that could be replaced by 50 lines of Liquid. Cutting 30 apps to 15 routinely takes 800ms off page load and $400/month off the bill. Boring; pays back fast.
